Editing

Dark Fantasy Editor

Responsibilities:

  • Manage book projects in the realm of dark fantasy within Dark Regions Press.
  • Scout for authors, manuscripts and ideas to create new book projects in your assigned genre.
  • Edit manuscripts and work with authors towards proofed, corrected and finalized manuscript ready for production and publication.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Must be well-read in dark fantasy.
  • Must have an excellent command of spelling, grammar and the English language. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and the Markup features.
  • Experience editing is preferred.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Experience in the small press or publishing industry is preferred.

We are seeking an editor of dark fantasy. The editor of dark fantasy will be reaching out to authors, creating, managing and finishing book projects, editing and finalizing manuscripts.  The editor must be well-read in dark fantasy, must have an excellent understanding of English grammar and editing experience is preferred. 

These are part-time paid contract positions.  It will not be a full-time position and the editors will be compensated on a per-project basis.

E-mail newsletter editor/marketing specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Create the bi-weekly newsletter in our newsletter template
  • Assist in the promotion of Dark Regions Press products by posting/sending press releases, social media, article writing and more.
  • Expand the marketing reach/vendor base/reviewer list of Dark Regions Press products and brand.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience with HTML and CSS is required for creating e-mail newsletters.
  • Must be well-written/well-spoken to create unique, engaging content for the website, newsletter, press releases and more.
  • Internet marketing experience is required, specifically in areas of Search Engine Optimization, Pay-Per-Click campaigns, Social Media Marketing, Copywriting and outreach.
  • Experience promoting books is preferred, but experience promoting products is essential.
  • Experience in the horror/dark fiction/fantasy/sci-fi genres is preferred but not required.

We are seeking an individual to maintain our bi-weekly newsletter and to assist in the promotion of our products and brand.  This is a part-time paid contract position.  The bulk of the work will occur when creating one of the newsletters and surrounding a new book launch, but work will be steady between these events as well.  HTML/CSS knowledge will be necessary when creating the e-mail newsletters.

Dark Regions Press is in need of a marketing specialist who understands that we are a small company, but with the right marketing and outreach efforts we will grow further, and thus compensation will grow for the marketing specialist.  The marketing specialist will follow-through with our preset marketing tasks but will be capable of engaging in outreach to find new vendors, reviewers, promoters and customers for Dark Regions Press.

Production

Book Interior Designer/Formatter

Responsibilities:

  • Taking an edited manuscript in either Adobe InDesign (preferred) or Microsoft Word and getting it ready for production by designing chapter headings, headers, footers, copyright pages and more.
  • Editing the design to make sure margins are correct, font sizes etc.
  • Understanding errors found by the staff and making necessary corrections before finalizing the manuscript.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience designing/formatting manuscripts/book interiors.  Samples required.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience editing and proofreading is preferred.
  • General knowledge of ebooks, ebook devices and the ebook industry.

We are seeking a book interior designer/formatter that can take a corrected and finalized manuscript in Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Word, format and edit it to make it ready for production, then submit it to the Dark Regions Press staff for approval.  Must be able to design and format on a timely basis and have experience/general knowledge of designing/formatting book interiors, the book industry and necessary technologies.

Internships

Dark Regions Press is offering internships to qualified candidates looking for excellent experience in the publishing industry.

Production

Book Interior Design

Responsibilities:

  • Taking a completed, proofread manuscript in Microsoft DOC or RTF format and designing it in Adobe InDesign to agreed specifications.
  • Customizing headings, footers, page numbers, copyright pages, signature pages and other book specific customizations.
  • Working with authors and staff on corrections and alterations of submitted designed manuscript.
  • Editing existing interior designs to requested specifications if necessary.
  • Answering project and company related e-mails in a timely manner.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience with Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience designing book interiors is preferred
  • Proficiency in general PC computer use.
  • Examples of interior design work required for position consideration.

We are seeking a motivated, efficient individual who can design a completed manuscript for our books to author and staff agreed specifications.  An experienced book interior designer should be able to complete the design of one of our books within three hours.

Proofreader

Responsibilities:

  • Taking an unedited manuscript and reading it fully from beginning to end, marking spelling errors, grammatical errors and other errors with proper notation.
  • Submitting proofread manuscript to staff via e-mail for review in Microsoft DOC format with edits shown via Markup mode enabled (preferred) or via snail mail with all edits properly marked on manuscript (not preferred).
  • Proof designed books for formatting errors, remaining grammatical/spelling errors and any other errors.

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience with Microsoft Word.
  • Experience proofreading.
  • Well-read and ability to read a full manuscript in a timely manner
  • Experience with horror and dark fiction genres is preferred.

We are seeking a proofreader who can read the unedited manuscripts and designed manuscripts of our books for all spelling errors, grammatical errors and other errors in a timely manner.  Being well-read in horror and dark fiction is a plus, being well-read in general is a big plus.

 

Dark Regions Press is seeking motivated individuals looking to become part of one of the fastest-growing specialty presses in the world.  These internships are unpaid initially, but based on performance could turn into paid positions.  For students our schedules are very flexible and we can work with you for your needed timeframe.  The positions are excellent for school credit, experience in the publishing industry, connections and high-quality references.
